There are many places where you can buy bees. Most of them will sell packaged bees from locations throughout the U.S. Most of these locations are from warmer climates where the bees have never overwintered in colder climates like Michigan. In addition, the primary use of bees in the U.S. is now for pollinating on a commercial level. Therefore, most available bees have been raised and heavily treated to keep them alive under the very difficult conditions designed for commercial pollination.
We believe there is another way to provide bees to the general beekeeping community. Although we have a limited quantity of beekeepers currently promoting the sale of bees through this site, we hope to add many more as this site develops. We are providing a means for small beekeepers, who have found a successful formula for keeping bees in Michigan, to offer their bees to the general public. For example, if you are a backyard beekeeper and do not want to treat your bees you may want to buy bees from a beekeeper who also has untreated hives. Or you may wish to buy bees from a beekeeper who raises bees with a verifiable trait such as VSH (Varroa Sensitive Hygenic). Or if your sole interest is to increase the probability that your hive will make it through the winter, then you should find a beekeeper that has splits from hives that have made it through a winter or better yet multiple winters.
This site attempts to provide beekeepers the opportunity to match their interests with local beekeepers with similar interests who can supply NUC's, splits, and queens.
All honeybees are NOT equal. Even within subspecies there are significant differences. Take a look at some of the material referenced below to better understand the many variations of the European Honeybee (Appis Mellifera)
